What Should Beginners Look for in a First Tent?

Beginners get the most out of a tent that pitches quickly, forgives mistakes and copes with typical UK weather rather than extreme conditions. Polyester is the most common tent fabric, valued because it resists UV damage and keeps stretching to a minimum even after repeated wet and dry cycles. Most family and backpacking tents use polyester because it holds its waterproof coating well over years of use.

Nylon is lighter and stronger than polyester for the same thickness of fabric, which is why lightweight backpacking and trekking-pole tents often use it. Nylon does stretch slightly when wet, so a nylon flysheet may need re-tensioning after heavy rain.

Polycotton blends cotton with polyester or nylon fibres, giving you the breathable, condensation-reducing feel of canvas with less bulk and faster drying time than pure cotton. Polycotton suits bell tents, family tents and glamping-style setups where a breathable feel under canvas matters more than ultra-light weight.

Denier, often shown as a number followed by "D" such as 75D or 210D, measures the thickness and weight of the individual fibres woven into the fabric. A higher denier number means a thicker, tougher fabric that resists tears and abrasion better, while a lower denier number means a lighter fabric that packs down smaller but needs more careful handling.

Thread count refers to how tightly the fibres are woven together within the fabric, and a tighter weave generally sheds water more effectively and feels less prone to fraying at the seams. A tent with a tight weave and a good waterproof coating often outperforms a looser weave even at the same denier rating.
